WORLD CHAMPION JOHN GETS ON HIS BIKE for CHARITY
You can help make his trip worthwhile!
National Hot Rod World Champion John Christie is noted as one of the fastest guys on four wheels around our raceways, well, soon we’ll see how good he is on two, with pedal power! John, and members of his regular racing crew have been training with four new bikes “At about £200 each, plus a few puncture kits!” which will carry the team in relays from John’s hometown near Crumlin, N.Ireland via the Belfast ferry to Birkenhead on Merseyside, and then it’s pedals all the way to Foxhall Stadium, Ipswich, in time for the 2014 World title race at SpedeWeekend. The car will, of course, arrive by more conventional means, and just in case the planned two days travel goes into extra time, there will be a support vehicle shadowing the bikes. The riders, as well as John himself, will be Michael McCambridge, Mark Davidson, Jonny McCoy, Paul Magee, Jim Brennan and father Trevor, and Roy Brown.
Action Cancer
This charity fund raising effort is on behalf of Action Cancer, and in an interview that you can read in full on www.nationalhotrod.com, John tells us :
“Action Cancer's dedicated team of staff and volunteers work across the whole of Northern Ireland helping to save lives and support people affected by cancer.
“They also fund vital research in conjunction with local universities into the treatment and cure of this terrible disease that will benefit the people of the whole of the UK, and indeed worldwide. Cancer is a devastating illness that affects millions of people, it has affected many of our team’s families and friends, and unfortunately there aren’t many people who haven’t been touched in some way by Cancer.
“As a team we have decided to do our bit to raise money to help those who are dealing with Cancer, and to support prevention of this terrible disease”
The charity is particularly dear to the Christie Crew, as Trevor Brennan’s wife Heather is currently in recovery, while Roy Brown’s daughter is undergoing treatment currently.
Maximum Attention
In a lengthy chat during our Wheelspin editor Paul Huggett’s recent visit to Northern Ireland, some of which appears in the current issue, John told Wheelspin that Action Cancer helps fund vital research right across the UK, and hopes that crossing the country in this way and attending the biggest gathering of fans and racers possible will enhance the amount that the team can collect, either en route, at SpedeWeekend itself, or online – the team has already taken the 962 car, painted bright pink “Which we’ll all be wearing, to get maximum attention” – to Ulster’s biggest agricultural and country event the Balmoral Show, and contributions have started well - £3000 of a targeted £20,000 has already come in. John told us : “As well as the ride itself, we’ll also be selling special pink tee-shirts at the World Final, and auctioning part of my car – the roof panel, painted for World, National, Irish Open and European Championships and autographed by all the drivers in the race. We reckon that will be the most sought-after bit of the car, so it will be interesting to see what we can add to the total that way!”
Besides the Wheelspin interview, there is more in the World Final weekend programme to look forward to…..
